SOUNDVIEW, The Bronx (WABC) — Dozens of NYCHA apartments in the Bronx have been without hot water for two weeks now, and residents say they are desperate.

“I have to go to the kitchen, boil a big pot of hot water and move it from the kitchen to the bathroom to make enough water for bathing,” said resident Renee Abdeen.

To make matters worse, Abdeen says she is legally blind and fears she will slip, fall and burn herself at night.

Abdeen lives in the Sotomayor houses in the Bronx, and her entire building, more than 50 apartments, has been without hot water for 14 days since the end of October.

“They are working on it, they are working on it. This is the only answer you will get,” Abdin said.

At the City Hall protest, NYCHA residents from across the city came to urge the city to do something about crumbling plaster, leaking pipes and thousands of pending repairs.

Back at the Sotomayor home, Carlos Gonzalez, who lives in the building with his wife and daughter, is just trying to survive.

“I have emphysema. I have cancer,” Gonzalez said.

What frustrates residents is that fixing the problem may not cost that much.

According to the residents, there is a new boiler house in the house, which produces a lot of heat. They just don’t get hot water.

Eyewitness news called NYCHA Tuesday night about problems in the building.

As of Tuesday evening, the crew had indeed begun pumping out water in the basement, which led to a problem.

When the hot water supply will be restored, it is not specified.
