After premiering the Disney+ movie “Rise” last week, Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo launched his latest Nike signature shoe, the Zoom Freak 4.
Unveiled in a launch colorway showcasing a layered upper blending salmon and neon colors with charcoal and gray, the shoe is highlighted by its oversized reverse Nike swoosh that protrudes from the wiry midsole.
A motivational quote stylized within the company’s unmistakable 50-year-old logo reads: “Whoever believed will become unbelievable.”
After signing a long-term extension with Nike, Antetokounmpo defined the vision and foundation that each model in his Signature series would represent during initial brainstorming sessions with designers in the fall of 2017.
“I wanted a good looking shoe that could tell a story that a child could relate to,” he outlined To Aaron Dodgson of Endscape.
The branding of the series has been an exploration from model to model, by design, taking inspiration from Antetokounmpo’s nickname “Greek Freak” and his unique style of play.
The Freak 1 featured a large reverse swoosh that nestled into the heel and protruded through the middle console. The second sneaker had an oversized swoosh that took up the most real estate possible on the side of the shoe. The Freak 3, which included a support strap for the first time, had a more subtly lined swoosh with collar.
With a dual-unit Zoom air cushioning setup in the forefoot and Nike React foam along the heel, the Freak 4 includes more technology than last year.
When Nike launched the Zoom Freak series in Greece in 2019 with an elaborate press event, the Bucks franchise player was on course to win his first NBA Most Valuable Player Award. He was also the first European player to receive a signature basketball shoe with Nike.
During the build-up to his signature series, Giannis has often made it to the NBA, telling stories about his humble beginnings in Greece, his family’s Nigerian background, and shared goals for a day each.
“I wanted my shoe to basically introduce me and my family to the world,” he said.
Each of his shoes includes the names of his three brothers – Thanasis, Costas and Alex – as well as a callout to their parents, often stylized as “Charles + Veronica.” While Giannis won’t be wearing his latest shoes to court until October, Zoom Freak 4 is expected to release soon this summer.
