New Delhi: Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani said on Saturday that the essence of Indian democracy is respect for diversity and freedom of expression. He expressed a desire that all people should collectively try to strengthen this “important democratic component”. In a statement on the eve of India’s 75th Independence Day, the former Deputy Prime Minister lauded the theme of this Independence Day, “Nation First, Always First”, and said that I can echo this echo in my own life and that of the BJP. I feel with the principle- ‘Nation first, party ahead, self last.”
Advani (93) said that the victory of independence in 1947 was accompanied by the tragedy of Partition. The Karachi-born leader said that after being a victim himself, he recalls the physical and emotional trauma that the tragedy caused displaced people on both sides of the border. Advani said that India has developed into a prosperous and strong nation despite many challenges, and its global footprint has grown significantly as the world tackles several pressing challenges ranging from accelerating the global economy to meeting climate change obligations. Looking for leadership to overcom”
It has been my firm belief that the essence of Indian democracy is respect for diversity and freedom of expression. It has contributed in making India a successful democracy. Therefore it is my wish that we all should make a collective effort to strengthen this important democratic component. Advani said he was happy to see a wave of national pride and self-confidence among Indians from all walks of life. He said, “I am also grateful that life has given me an opportunity to dedicate my life to the service of the nation in the post-independence era and to make my humble contribution through my party- Bharatiya Janata Party.”
