- Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata Motors register a jump in sales

The eclipse on the Indian car industry, which has been battling the chip crisis for the last two years, may have started to fade away. In the month of May, the sales of major car companies of the country such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata Motors have registered a jump. Despite a global semiconductor shortage, strong demand for passenger vehicles across sectors led companies to supply a significant number of vehicles to dealers.
In terms of domestic wholesale sales, Tata Motors vehicle sales exceeded Hyundai’s during May, 2022. With this, the sales of the country’s largest car company Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) in the domestic market increased to 1,34,222 units in May. The company sold only 35,293 vehicles in May 2021 due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
Maruti’s strong comeback
In the case of small cars, Maruti once again appeared to be making a comeback this month. Sales in the compact segment, including models like Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno and DZire, stood at 67,947 units in May this year. Last month, the company’s sales of small cars like Alto and S-Presso stood at 17,408 units.
Tata in second place
Tata Motors sales rose to 43,341 units in May. This is the highest monthly sales of the company till date. Tata has achieved this position by leaving behind the South Korean company Hyundai. Last month, the company’s sales of electric vehicles reached its all-time high of 3,454 units.
Hyundai lags behind plant closure
Hyundai sold 42,293 vehicles in May. However, due to this, its production was affected due to maintenance at both the plants of the company in Chennai from May 16 to 21. In the last month, the company exported 8,970 units as against 5,702 units in the same month a year ago.
Mahindra’s XUV700 and Thar were hits
Mahindra & Mahindra’s (M&M) domestic sales stood at 26,904 units in May. Vijay Nakra, President – Automotive Division, M&M said, “We have sold 26,632 SUVs in May. All our brands including XUV700 and Thar have done well.”
Growth in two wheeler segment
Bajaj Auto’s domestic sales in the two-wheeler segment rose to 1,12,308 units in May. The company had sold 60,830 two-wheelers in the same month last year. TVS Motor Company’s two-wheeler sales also increased last month to 1,91,482 units as against 52,084 units in May 2021.
