ADA, Oklahoma (KTEN) — A suspect is under arrest in connection with a bizarre weekend murder case in Pontotok County.

The incident took place on Saturday afternoon near the city limits of Ada. MPs said Larry Doyle Sanders, 53, confessed to a family member that he had killed his friend Jimmy Knighten on the South Canada River.

“He looked like he was on something,” Sheriff John Christian said of Sanders. “His claim was that Mr. Knighten called Bigfoot to come and kill him, so he had to kill Mr. Knighten.”

“Sanders and Knighten were roaming the river on Saturday when the altercation ensued,” the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation said in a statement. “Sanders said he punched and strangled Knighten.”

Search agencies and the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Department were unable to locate the victim’s body until Sunday afternoon. Investigators are now working to uncover the details of the crime.

“It always makes life easier,” Christian said. “You have yet to prove all the elements of the crime, and what the suspect tells you actually happened.”

OSBI agents charged Sanders with first-degree murder.
